Tacoma: The City of Destiny
Tacoma sits at the southern anchor of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area, Washington's largest urban corridor and home to approximately 210 cannabis retail stores combined. While Seattle claims the lion's share of those retailers, Tacoma has carved out its own cannabis identity as a more affordable, less congested alternative with its own distinct neighborhoods and retail character.
As part of the broader metro corridor, Tacoma benefits from the same mature, decade-old legal market that defines the Puget Sound region. Washington's first retail stores opened in July 2014, and Tacoma-area shops have had over a decade to refine their product selections, train knowledgeable staff, and establish themselves in their communities.
The Seattle-Tacoma Cannabis Corridor
The Interstate 5 corridor connecting Seattle and Tacoma is one of the most dispensary-dense stretches in the Pacific Northwest. Travelers moving between the two cities will find licensed retailers in communities along the entire route, including Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, and Lakewood. Whether you are visiting Tacoma specifically or just passing through the metro area, you are never far from a licensed store.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord: Federal Land Warning
This is the single most important thing cannabis consumers near Tacoma need to understand.
Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is a major U.S. military installation located immediately south of Tacoma. JBLM is federal property, and federal law still classifies cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance. This means:
- Cannabis possession on JBLM is a federal crime, regardless of Washington state law
- Do not bring cannabis onto the base for any reason, even if you are a civilian visiting the PX, commissary, or other on-base facilities
- Military personnel are prohibited from using, possessing, or purchasing cannabis under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), even off-base and off-duty in a legal state
- Federal law enforcement has jurisdiction on the base and can enforce federal drug laws
Joint Base Lewis-McChord is federal property where cannabis remains completely illegal. Do not carry any cannabis — flower, edibles, vape cartridges, or any product — onto the base. This applies to everyone: civilians, visitors, family members, and military personnel. Federal penalties apply.
Beyond JBLM: Other Federal Areas
JBLM is the most prominent federal property near Tacoma, but it is not the only one. Mount Rainier National Park, a popular day trip from the Tacoma area, is also federal land where cannabis possession is illegal. The same applies to any national forest, federal courthouse, post office, or other federal facility. Always consume and store your cannabis on private property or in other lawful locations before traveling to these areas.
Tacoma Cannabis Market
Tacoma's cannabis retail market reflects the broader dynamics of Washington's mature industry. The statewide moratorium on new retail licenses (with exceptions for social equity applicants) means the city's existing stores are established operations that have survived over a decade of competition.
Like the rest of Washington, Tacoma consumers benefit from the price compression caused by industry oversupply. The state's cultivation capacity of roughly 2.6 million pounds far exceeds actual demand of about 1.1 million pounds, which has driven pre-tax prices down significantly. Even with Washington's steep tax structure, the final prices at Tacoma-area dispensaries are competitive.
Products Available
Tacoma dispensaries carry the same full range of products available statewide under Washington law:
- Flower and pre-rolls (including infused pre-rolls)
- Concentrates — wax, shatter, oils, vape cartridges
- Edibles — gummies, chocolates, capsules, beverages (10 mg/serving, 100 mg/package for recreational)
- Tinctures and topicals
- Liquid edibles and infused beverages
Stores with medical endorsements also serve registered patients with higher-potency DOH-compliant products and tax-exempt purchasing.
